John Fisher
Professor Emeritus
Bio
Dr. Fisher received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1972. He received his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Miami in 1968 and his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Florida in 1966. Dr. Fisher held academic appointments at the University of Virginia, Clemson University and North Carolina State University. He retired from NC State in 2005 as a Professor Emeritus in Civil Engineering. He was the Director of the NC State Center for Transportation and the Environment and the Co-Director of the NC State-Kenan Natural Hazards Mapping Program.
During his academic career his research focused on the field of coastal engineering with an emphasis on the impacts of severe storms on natural shorelines. Dr. Fisher research has been supported by numerous state and federal agencies including the U. S. Army Research Office, Sea Grant, and the North Carolina Department of Transportation. He has numerous technical publications and has made presentations at both national and international conferences in the field of coastal engineering.
Dr. Fisher served as the President of the Association of Coastal Engineers and has served on and chaired technical committees for the Transportation Research Board, the American Society of Civil Engineers and the State of North Carolina. Dr. Fisher is a licensed Professional Engineer in North Carolina. Private sector positions included VP of Cubit Engineering, LTD and President of the Civil Analysis Group, Inc. He is a founding principal of FDH, Inc. and served as President and Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Area(s) of Expertise
Dr. Fisher has spent the bulk of his academic career investigating the relationship between coastal environments and storms with particular interest in the way natural beaches respond to severe wave impacts. This work has included the prediction of the rates of shoreline erosion and the consequences of adding man-made structures to natural beaches and the role of coastal dunes in long-term shoreline change.
