Dr. Paul Zia was a Distinguished University Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering and Alumni Distinguished Graduate Professor Emeritus at NC State University. Over a career spanning more than 50 years, he made lasting contributions to the field through teaching, research and professional leadership.

A renowned structural engineer, Dr. Zia’s work advanced the understanding and application of reinforced and prestressed concrete, high-performance materials and bridge engineering. He advised more than 60 graduate students and led research that influenced both academic knowledge and engineering practice.

His leadership extended across the profession. He served as president of the American Concrete Institute and was an honorary member of both ACI and the American Society of Civil Engineers. In 1983, he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in recognition of his significant contributions to engineering research and practice.

Among his many honors, Dr. Zia received NC State’s highest faculty distinction, the Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal for Excellence, and was recognized nationally for his role advising the relocation of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse — a defining engineering achievement.

The lecture series stands as a tribute to his legacy, reflecting the same commitment to excellence, innovation and real-world impact.
