Gibson was raised in a farming community in rural North Carolina. She currently resides in Fuquay Varina, North Carolina, with her husband Terry and their two dogs. She has two married children and two grandchildren. Gibson comes from an NC State family. Her father, husband, son, daughter and both their spouses all graduated from NC State, and five of them received degrees in engineering. Gibson is a registered professional engineer with more than 30 years of experience in transportation engineering including experience in railway, highway and bridge projects. Gibson began her career with the North Carolina Department of Transportation and after ten years joined a private engineering consulting company. She opened her own engineering firm, Gibson Engineers, in 2003 and grew it into a successful business. Gibson Engineers was acquired by Mott MacDonald in December of 2010. Gibson’s highway experience includes designing a variety of roadway projects ranging from small bridge replacements to large full directional interchanges and freeway design. Her rail experience includes the preliminary design and plan preparation for passenger and freight rails, conducting at grade crossing inventories, designing freight rail sidings, and assisting with traffic separation studies for various municipalities. Gibson is currently a senior vice president for Mott MacDonald and leads the company operations in southern Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, West Virginia and Tennessee.
