Computing and Systems Colloquium: Data Related Cyberinfrastructures: Peril and Possibility

December 2, 2016 @ 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm

Chris Lenhardt, Brian Blanton
Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI), UNC-CH

Most, if not all, contemporary science disciplines use an array of digital data sources, tools, models, and cyberinfrastructure. However, most scientists still conduct their analyses at a local level, i.e. their desktop, or within the constraints of their institutional compute and data infrastructure, and spend a large amount of time just finding and accessing data. What to do then, when data is more and more distributed, larger in volume and complexity, and research requires more access to high performance computing and high throughput computing.  This presentation will outline these challenges and review leading edge and emerging technologies that are being operationalized to address these challenges and foster a dialog with those present about the issues raised.
