Bio

Dr. William H. Martin is a Lecturer in the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at North Carolina State University, where his primary focus is teaching. He brings more than two decades of structural, geotechnical, and construction engineering practice to the classroom, along with experience in land development and land surveying.

Before returning to academia, Dr. Martin built a career in the design-build telecommunications industry, advancing from project engineer to President and Chief Engineer and helping grow his firm from fifteen employees to roughly 1,400 across offices in the United States, Canada, and India. He holds a broad set of professional credentials, including licensure as a professional engineer (P.E.) in all fifty U.S. states and several territories, a structural engineer (S.E.) in every state that recognizes the designation, a geotechnical engineer (G.E.) in California and Oregon, a professional engineer in British Columbia (P.Eng.), and a chartered engineer in Ireland (CEng MIEI), along with a professional land surveyor (P.L.S.) license in North Carolina, general contractor licensure in several states, and certifications as a welding inspector and welder. He has contributed to national standards development through the ANSI/TIA-222 and ASCE 7 committees, and he recently began volunteering as a subject matter expert with NCEES, the national body for engineering and surveying licensure.

In 2023, drawn by a longstanding desire to teach the next generation of engineers, Dr. Martin returned to NC State to pursue a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, which he completed in 2026. His doctoral research developed a non-contact, wireless route for activating self-healing in fiber-reinforced polymer composites. The project was highly multidisciplinary, drawing on civil engineering, chemistry, materials science, mechanical and aerospace engineering, and electrical engineering.

Dr. Martin teaches courses on structural engineering mechanics and land development, bringing his professional practice directly into the classroom.

Dr. Martin's teaching and professional expertise center on structural design in steel, reinforced concrete, timber, and masonry, together with geotechnical engineering and the design of new and retrofit structures. His broader experience includes land development and land surveying, engineering standards development, and engineering education, connecting decades of professional practice with the classroom. This is complemented by multidisciplinary doctoral research in self-healing structural composites.
