Undergraduate Resources

Research Experience for Undergraduates
High-achieving CCEE students can step beyond the classroom through our Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program. Working alongside faculty mentors, participants conduct meaningful research in civil, construction and environmental engineering — gaining hands-on experience that strengthens graduate school applications and sharpens professional focus.
Competitive and selective, the REU program is designed for students ready to deepen their expertise, contribute to real discovery and explore advanced study pathways.
Eligibility & Commitment
Preferred qualifications
- Minimum sophomore standing
- 3.5 overall and CCEE GPA (strong proposals considered)
Students must identify a faculty mentor, define mutual research interests and develop a proposal prior to applying. Lab-based projects may require safety training and access approval.
Time expectations
- Fall/Spring: Approximately 6–10 hours per week (roughly equivalent to 3 credit hours)
- Summer: Full-time commitment; no concurrent coursework or outside employment
Summer participants also engage in seminars and workshops through the NC State CCEE RISE program and present at the Annual NC State Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium.
Application Deadlines
Apply at go.ncsu.edu/reuapplications
Fall
- Early: August 1
- Final: Fall census date
Spring
- Early: Wednesday before Fall Graduation
- Final: Spring census date
Summer
- Early: Friday before Spring Break
- Final: May 1
Early submissions may be approved immediately or deferred to the final review cycle. Proposals are evaluated by the Undergraduate Programs Committee for quality and clarity.
Stipend and Financial Information
Award amounts
- $1,850 per semester (Fall/Spring)
- $6,250 for Summer
Fall and Spring stipends are applied as credits to the student account. Summer awards are issued as a one-time payment. If a student does not complete the research project, the stipend must be returned.
Awards are funded by the College of Engineering and administered through the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid. Stipends may affect financial aid eligibility and may be considered taxable income. Students should consult IRS Publication 970 and Form 1040 instructions for reporting guidance.
Faculty may also offer work-study or hourly research positions, which carry different payment structures and financial aid implications.
