CCEE alum and advisory board member Ryan White (BSCE 2000) delivered the baccalaureate address. White, who works as the Raleigh Office Leader and Design Services Growth Leader- Southeast Transportation for Stantec Consulting, talked about his experience as a U.S. Army Engineer Officer and how it has played into his focus on environmental justice community engagement.
“One of the first things that we learned as cadets was our cadet creed: ‘Mission first. People always.’ What is our mission? We’re civil engineers, construction engineers and environmental engineers. So what is our mission? Is our mission to build infrastructure? To solve environmental problems? That’s just what we do. Our mission is to make the world a better place. And so when we think about the mission and what we do, we’re in the infrastructure business. And we make infrastructure. For whom? People. So we as engineers are in the people business. … What we’ve got to remember is to see our projects through the lens of the folks who have to live with them.”
