According to Dr. Detlef Knappe, CCEE professor and researcher, approximately 250,000 people in three eastern North Carolina counties are affected by a toxic chemical known as GenX. The contaminating compound is released into the Cape Fear River at an industrial site about 100 miles upstream from Wilmington, NC.
