Title: Modeling, Forecasting and Decision Making for Sustainability

Abstract: Increasing the share of energy from renewable sources can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and local pollution. However, one of the main problems with renewable energy is its dependence on natural resources. This talk will focus on the application of statistical methods to quantify and deal with uncertainty in water inflows and properly generate forecasts that will serve as input by decision-making models. We seek a suitable probabilistic model to generate forecasts at each hydropower plant reservoir. Such forecasts are then combined in a scenario-tree scheme to be used as input for a multistage stochastic programming model. The developed model is applied to a realistic case study of the Brazilian hydropower system.
