Title: Emerging Risks of Engineered Nanomaterials

Abstract: The use of engineered nanomaterials in consumer products and other applications continues to increase steadily, despite their largely unknown impacts on health and the environment. In addition, standard approaches to assessing the health and environmental impacts using traditional risk assessment methods continue to struggle to adapt to nano-specific properties. Alternative test methods and frameworks have been proposed in recent years, although the validation of these new approaches on new materials has been challenging thus far. This presentation provides an overview of the main challenges to evaluating the risks of engineered nanomaterials and provides a glimpse at current research endeavors in this field. An overview of work performed at RTI International (RTP, NC) will also be presented as well as areas of potential collaboration with NCSU.
