Professional Development Program
Postdoctoral Scholars have access to all professional development programs available through the Graduate School. This includes:
Academic Career Preparation:
Academic Packways: Gearing Up for Faculty (help in mid-May)
Get feedback on your faculty job application documents, learn more about the various types of faculty roles available (community colleges, liberal arts schools, research-intensive), and get tips on negotiating a job offer.
A year-long immersive program to prepare you to handle the various roles that accompany being a faculty member including effective mentoring & teaching opportunities.
Applications typically are due in March of each year for the following academic year.
Teaching & Communication Certificate Program
Hosts a variety of workshops with the goal of preparing graduate students and postdocs to be able to communicate effectively and persuasively – relevant for academic & non-academic careers.
Writing Support & Opportunities
Includes workshops focused on grant writing, writing for
publication, and more

Industry Career Preparation: Accelerate to Industry (A2i)
A2i connects grad students and postdocs to industry partners to learn more about the key skills needed to succeed in a career in industry: communication, project management, teamwork, & leadership. A variety of offerings allow for deep networking and interaction with a variety of companies located in the Research Triangle Region & beyond.

Office of Postdoctoral Affairs
Individualized feedback and career services from the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs are available.
The Postdoc Program Manager, Chris Smith, Ph.D., can assist postdocs
in career exploration and preparation, including providing feedback on job application documents.
Schedule a one-on-one with Chris on his Google Calendar.
Resources through NC State Libraries:
Library Workshops cover a range of topics relevant to data analysis & communication/presentation.
The Peers Scholars program also allows grad students and postdocs to lead
workshops of interest to them at the libraries and be compensated for their time.

Funding available exclusively to postdocs:
Travel Awards are available quarterly to assist postdocs in traveling to present their work at scientific meetings.
Up to $500 for domestic & $750 for international travel expenses.
Application Deadlines in September, December, March, & June each year
Professional Development Award for Postdocs allows for postdocs to propose a unique training/learning/career development opportunity and secure cost coverage up to $1,000 from OPA.

Student Health Services & Counseling Center Access
All postdocs on the postdoc medical plan have access to Student Health Services and Counseling Center resources including options for referrals as well as an after-hours mental emergency hotline: 919-515-2423 (option 2)
