SUMMARY:Public Talk by Hesham Rakha: Ethical AI in the Context of Connected Automated Vehicles
DESCRIPTION:Free Event but Registration Required \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/ethical-ai-in-the-context-of-connected-automated-vehicles-tickets-91080441051 \n  \nAbstract \nThe objective of the presentation is to stimulate discussion on the various ethical AI issues associated with connected automated vehicles (CAVs). CAVs are an influential emerging technology expected to generate transformative improvements in the transportation system. Specifically\, CAVs can extend the benefits of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs) through the real-time exchange of information between vehicles and infrastructure and through the various levels of vehicle automation (levels 1 through 5\, with 5 being fully-autonomous vehicles). CAV technology encompasses a set of applications to connect vehicles to each other and to the road infrastructure using vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications\, collectively known as V2X. These technologies generate real-time data that can assist drivers in avoiding congestion\, reducing vehicle stops\, driving more safely\, and achieving optimal energy/fuel efficiency. The various levels of automation and the sharing of data comes with various ethical challenges and issues. Some of these issues will be highlighted and discussed in the presentation\, including: (1) can AI algorithms foresee and avoid all potential vehicle conflicts? (2) If not\, will we be able to understand the logic behind decisions these AI systems make? (3) How will data privacy be maintained and ensured? (4) Who will be liable when an incident occurs? (5) How can we overcome the bias in AI systems (e.g. favoring more expensive vehicles over less-expensive lower technology vehicles)? (5) How will AI systems deal with pedestrians and bicyclists? (6) What will the long-term effects of AI systems on driver and traveler behavior?
