CCEE alum and advisory board member Joey Hopkins (BSCE Construction Option 1989) delivered the baccalaureate address. Hopkins, who serves as the North Carolina Department of Transportation Secretary, spoke of the importance of continuing to learn and grow, even after graduation.
“This university has equipped you with most of the knowledge and technical tools that you’ll need to conquer the world,” Hopkins said. “But surprisingly enough, engineering is not always black and white. In fact, there’s a lot more gray in engineering than most of us care to admit. . … Soft skills are just as important, if not more so, than any technical skill you now possess. You will be dealing with real people that have real issues or concerns, and you don’t do that with a calculator or a manual — you do that with effective communication.”
